Verpa bohemica and Morchella americana are confused for one another often enough to be worth putting next to each other.
Arrives weeks before the true morels and is sold as one in parts of North America, but repeated meals cause loss of coordination in some people. The cap hangs free from the stem like a thimble.
The morel most Americans actually pick, and the cause of a seasonal migration of commercial pickers north up the continent as the ground warms. Like every morel it is poisonous raw.
