About the daily puzzle

The daily deals 8 wild mushrooms and asks you to call each one edible, poisonous or inedible. It is dealt for a continent: everyone playing the European puzzle gets the same 8 species, in the same order, with the same photograph of each, and the set changes at midnight UTC. Your continent is guessed from your browser’s timezone (no IP lookup, no third-party request), and the buttons above the puzzle are how you correct the guess or ask for the worldwide deck instead.

No server is involved in keeping that in sync. The date and the continent are fed through a hash into a seeded random number generator, so the same day produces the same deck wherever it is computed, two browsers on opposite sides of Europe independently arrive at an identical puzzle, with nothing passing between them. Nothing else about you enters that calculation: not your language, not your device, not what you played yesterday.

Because the decks differ, the share grid names the continent it was played on. Two grids from two continents are two different puzzles, and the number alone would invite a comparison it cannot support. Playing a continent’s puzzle is a choice you make before you start, switching afterwards does not deal you a second puzzle for the day.

Each deck is balanced rather than random: three poisonous, three edible, two inedible. A genuinely random draw occasionally deals seven poisonous species in a row, and once players notice a run like that they start guessing the pattern instead of looking at the mushroom, which defeats the exercise.

Your streak, best streak and today’s result are stored in your own browser and are never sent anywhere. The share format is deliberately spoiler-free: it shows which of the eight you got right, and not which mushrooms they were.
